Meet Kirk Whalen and Kelley Doyle, the heart and soul behind Cape Breton Lake Cottages. Kirk, a Cape Breton native, and Kelley, originally from Middleton, Nova Scotia, have always shared a deep-rooted passion for travel, hospitality, and connecting with loved ones. Their journeys have taken them across the globe, but the call of Cape Breton’s serene landscapes and vibrant culture inspired them to create a haven where guests can experience the same warmth and adventure they cherish. With a commitment to comfort and a love for sharing the beauty of their surroundings, Kirk and Kelley invite you to be part of their extended family at Cape Breton Lake Cottages.
The Hands That Built It
Much of the building and renovation work at Cape Breton Lake Cottages has been done by Kirk himself. With a deep appreciation for quality craftsmanship and a strong work ethic, he’s poured time, effort, and heart into making the property a space where guests can truly unwind.
Kirk’s personal touch extends beyond the buildings. Don’t be surprised if you see Kirk around the grounds, tending to details or even stoking the fire in your wood-fired hot tub so it’s ready when you return from a day of exploring.
The Brains Behind It
While Kirk is hands-on with the tools, Kelley keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes. She handles the business side of things with care and precision—managing bookings, keeping the cottages spotless, and making sure guests have everything they need for a perfect stay. She’s also the one making sure Kirk doesn’t get too carried away with new projects (or at least finishes the ones he starts!). Together, they balance hard work with a shared love for good living, often daydreaming and planning their next vacation when the cottages are quiet and the fire is crackling.
The Real Boss
No proper lakeside operation runs without a supervisor, and Zoë the dog takes her role very seriously. As the official comfort tester and view inspector, she’s made it her mission to ensure every lounger has the best angle on the lake and every path meets her high standards. Guests might catch her making her rounds, tail wagging, as she double-checks that the firepit seating is up to snuff or that the deck is getting just the right amount of sun.
